POL301. Classical Western Political Theory (4cr)
Introduction to the classics of Western political thought, with a focus on democracy and its critique. The canon to be studied includes: Plato's Republic; Aristotle's Politics and Nicomachean Ethics; Machiavelli's The Prince and The Discourses; Hobbes's Leviathan; Locke's Two Treatises of Civil Government; Rousseau's Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and The Social Contract; and Mill's Representative Government and On Liberty.
