POL305. Modern Western Political Theory (4cr)
Introduction to the modern and contemporary canon of Western political thought, with a focus on liberty and its limits. The course covers the following topics: Utilitarianism and Kantianism (Bentham, Kant, and Mill); liberal justice (Rawls and Nozick); liberty (Berlin); community (MacIntyre and Walzer); nationalism (Renan and Viroli); and other critics of liberalism (conservatism [Oakeshott], Marxism [Cohen, Foucault], and feminism).
