ART465. Methodology in Art History (4cr)
This course is designed to introduce students to a set of new methods of interpretation currently in use in the discipline of art history. After a brief survey of the traditional methodologies such as formalism, iconography/iconology, and Marxism, students will examine new methodologies including the social history of art, phenomenology, structuralism/post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, feminism, and postcolonial approach. These newer methodologies do not necessarily replace the more traditional methods of art historical study, but rather integrate them into more critically sophisticated syntheses. Students will learn how to use and reflect on these methodologies by applying them to actual works of art.
