Students are encouraged to study abroad. Studying abroad for up to a year allows students to broaden their cultural horizons, further develop their language skills (be it in English or another language), and take courses not offered by the FLA. Many students go abroad in their junior year although study abroad as either a second semester sophomore or a first semester senior are also possible.
With an ever-expanding set of exchange relations with 150 colleges and universities in North and South America, Europe, East Asia and Southeast Asia, there are many opportunities for studying abroad and experiencing different cultures. One advantage of studying on an exchange program is that students only pay Sophia tuition while credits can be transferred back to Sophia and count towards your graduation.
More information about the exchange program and participating universities can be found on the website of the Office of Global Education and Collaboration (in Japanese).
